You can also enjoy visiting Historic Jamestowne, settled in 1607, the first English speaking colony. Here you can also take guided tours through the Powhatan Indian village, replicas of the three ships that brought the settlers from England and the colonial fort. Colonial Williamsburg's 18th-century world is here too, along with the Town of Appalachia, considered to be an intact "era town" of the late 1800s-early 1900s, and the center of a booming coal mining culture, and serving as the hub of eight coal camps just outside of town.
Many of the coal camps remain as well as much of the coal mining equipment. Be sure to see the Bee Rock Tunnel — known as the shortest railroad tunnel in the world — which is listed in Ripley's Believe It or Not! Or explore Mount Vernon and the George Washingtons' traditions, and learn about Martha Washington and Tobias Lear, who served as Washington’s secretary during his presidency.
Or spend some time at the John Marshall House, or the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy There's tons of variety in Virginia's beaches — from the action-packed shores of Virginia Beach to the uninhabited sands of Assateague Island and the hideaways of Virginia's tidal rivers — and all catering to family fun!
